D-ne (D音) is one of the main characters of the story. She had her debut in the song Aimless Imitation Chair Stealing Game.

Appearance[]

D-ne has long, straight-cut purple (black in the novels) hair and blue (also black in the novels) eyes. She is noted to have a slender figure. After acquiring the Monkey's Paw and wishing for B-ko's red (also often depicted as blue) ribbon, she cuts her hair short, just like B-ko's, and further uses her wishes to obtain eyes identical to B-ko's.[5]

She is mostly seen wearing her school uniform - a white collared button down shirt with a V-neck purple sweater over it, alongside a red and white tie. Over them she wears a beige blazer with red trims, decorated with six red buttons on the lower left side and her school emblem on the left breast of the blazer. Unlike B-ko and similar to C-ta, she wears her blazer completely unbuttoned. She also wears a red and black plaid skirt, black thigh high socks, and brown shoes.

Personality[]

D-ne is a quiet, pessimistic-looking girl who admires and compliments B-ko a lot. Despite her shy nature, however, after confronting C-ta about their similar behaviors for their loved ones, she discovered that she enjoys mocking at people until she hits a nerve. However, she notes that although this particular thought is hers, she also feels like it's someone else's, which scares her.

She is only nice towards B-ko and secretly makes fun of everyone else and particularly hates A-ya and C-ta for getting between her and B-ko.[5] She is also quite blunt. She will genuinely express her feelings no matter the situation, and will seemingly go out of her way to do so. Especially in the first parts of the manga and novels, she is shown to be less easily scared by the consequences of the Demise Game, unlike the other characters.

Despite these negative traits, at first, she seems to lack a hold on her own identity, and even as a young child would attempt to copy the identity of Ririka, the doll that she owned as a young child and her first friend/love, instead of exploring and finding out things she herself likes as a person. However, when she realized she could not be Ririka, the object of her affections and her 'ideal' girl, she became devastated, and stopped playing with Ririka after that.

D-ne is rather clingy towards B-ko, the first person she ever liked after Ririka, and they do appear to view each other as friends. Also, in the video for Common Heroes, B-ko is seen grabbing and cupping D-ne's face, with a determined look, and D-ne's eyes become watery with tears. They appear to want to stop, for each other, whatever's happening to them, as seen in Bookmark of Demise.

D-ne is also fond of strong scents, unlike B-ko. B-ko notes that the smell of D-ne's shampoo is that of a sweet osmanthus, and when D-ne "becomes" B-ko, a classmate notices that she "changed" her shampoo. D-ne also seems giddy as she smells it.

In "First Series Notice", a preview PV uploaded on NicoNico Douga, D-ne's official profile is given. In the video, she is noted to be a quiet and sensible girl - however, those involved in the incident compliment her for her sharp eyes and her awareness of the little things that most other people usually don't. She is also noted to be one of the people who led the "occurrence", like A-ya. She is heard during a voice-over, begging to save the "listener"'s future. It appears that D-ne is also determined to help solve the mystery.[1]

Trivia[]

D-ne (9)

D-ne's doll, Ririka.

  • She uses the Japanese personal pronoun "watashi" (私)[1]. In formal or polite contexts, this is gender neutral; in casual speech, it is typically only used by women. Compared to the more feminine pronoun "atashi" (あたし), however, "atashi" tends to be common among younger women.[6]
  • Her horoscope is Virgo.[1]
  • Her birth flower is crepe myrtle.[1]
  • Her floriography is eloquence, and her special trait is her evil/scheming smile.
  • D-ne fell in love with B-ko at first sight. At one point, D-ne confesses to B-ko, and kisses her.[7][8]
  • Before meeting B-ko, her only friend was her doll, Ririka.
  • She appears to have a preference for women, and more particularly has feelings for B-ko. Because of her preference, she can be seen as LGBT+ representation.
  • D-ne wears contact lenses, and when not wearing them, she wears a pair of glasses.[9]
